About George

I am an Albuquerque based multi-disciplined artist of 28 years, working with my wife and partner, Rachel Megargee. My passion has become bronze sculpting but I have also specialized in steel fabrication, wood carvings, drawings and paintings. I am a welder by trade and have studied art at the University of New Mexico and Art Instruction, Inc., and Foundry studies at Mesaland Community College in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Rachel Megargee has a degree in Fine Arts from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, PA. and has worked tirelessly by my side on this latest project.

The artistic name that I carry is George Herman Salas. I took this name in honor of my late mother. 20 years ago, as I struggled to find my artistic identity, I stumbled onto a memory of her that inspired me to adopt her maiden name for my art.

I have recently completed what is one of my proudest achievement; a life-sized bronze sculpture depicting a Vietnam era soldier paying final respects to a fallen comrade. This tribute is a permanent fixture at the Albuquerque, New Mexico Veterans Memorial Park.  I am humbled and honored to have been able to create this monument to my fellow Vietnam Veterans.

I have completed other works honoring our veterans. Most noteworthy is a steel flag twenty feet in height that is intended to show a country divided over the Vietnam War. This monument is now displayed in the Village of Tijeras at the Veterans Memorial.

I am a disabled Vietnam Veteran of 1969-1970. When I returned Stateside, art became my therapy and is now my passion. I trust that my work is a worthy tribute. Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another.
